Hosting a Baby Shower – What are the Rules?
In Emily Post’s day, there were very strict rules about hosting a baby shower. Then, it was considered improper to give a shower for a member of the family, unmarried woman, or a woman that had more than one child. A shower is a gift receiving event and the family didn’t want to look like they were asking for gifts, so it used to be hosted only by someone outside of the family. If the mother was unmarried, she usually didn’t advertise that she was pregnant and went off somewhere to have the baby undisclosed. And giving a shower for a second time around mother was just considered greedy. Please don’t consider not hosting a baby shower because of these silly, outdated reasons.
Hosting a Baby Shower Today
But not today! Today, the shower is usually hosted by someone who is close to the new mom. Any relative, friend, neighbor, or co-worker can act as host. Even mothers or sisters can give the party for the new mommy.
I hosted a baby shower for my own daugther when she was pregnant with her first baby. I didn’t give it a second thought…and neither did my guests.
